HDBaseT Finalizes Specification – One Wire AV Alternative

Though you may have not yet heard about HDBaseT, it has been out in the news for some time.   The HDBaseT Alliance was formed to promote and commercialize the HDBaseT technology. This technology is aimed at enabling a single LAN cable to replace multiple cables and connectors in the home entertainment environment. HDBaseT is optimized for video application and can provide connections to deliver uncompressed full HD digital video, audio, 100BaseT Ethernet, power over cable and various control signals.

The everything in one cable is now known as 5Play, which should enable you to send everything you need for a home theatre up to 100 meters with no loss of resolution and no need for compression.   In addition, it has the amount of bandwidth necessary to support 3D video and even 2Kx4K video formats.

With the finalization of the specification, HDBaseT compliant products should begin hitting the shelves soon.  The alliance is made up of Sony, Samsung, LG and Valens; therefore, it's most likely that one of these brands will be the leaders in introducing products utilizing this new standard. It’s expected that products will start rolling out in late 2010, with a bigger wave to start in early 2011.
